Abstract

1453820 Boriding machined metal workpieces VAC-HYD PROCESSING GmbH 3 June 1975 23952/75 Heading C7U A machined metal workpiece is borided by applying a layer of a boron containing compound to the surface and heating to 700-1100‹C in a medium comprising a deoxidizing and/or reducing gas. The boron compound e.g. (Registered Trade Mark) "Borkote" or (Registered Trade Mark) "Implife" is mixed as a 1-10 micron powder with an acrylic resin binder and acetone and applied to the workpiece by spraying or dipping. After drying, the coating may be removed from those parts which are not to be borided and boriding is then effected at 700-1100‹C for up to 10 hours in a N 2 -H 2 gas mixture. The workpiece is preferably steel and the borided workpiece may then be hardened in vacuo by quenching in oil or by the undercooled gas bathing process and then tempered in a deoxidizing atmosphere.
