Abstract

1453400 Fluidised bed apparatus TAKEDA YAKUHIN KOGYO KK 3 April 1974 [16 April 1973] 14792/74 Heading B1F [Also in Divisions C1 and F4] An apparatus for the preparation of activated carbon comprises a shaft kiln 10 having a vertical cavity formed therein which is divided by a horizontal perporated gas flow distributor 13 into a reactor chamber 11 and a combustion chamber 12; the reaction chamber is divided vertically into a plurality of activation compartments, e.g. by a partitioning walls 14a-14c, the dividing means having at least one passage 15a or 15b communicating between the activation compartments through which the carbonaceous material flows from the first to the final compartment. The first activation compartment is charged with material, e.g. non-caking coal, carbonised lignite or carbonised vegetable material, at a constant rate and the activated material is removed from the last compartment e.g. via an overflow duct 18 formed in the kiln 10. The combustion chamber 12 is divided into combustion compartments 12a-12c one immediately below each activation compartment with separate fuel burners (21a-21c) and steam injectors (22a-22c) connected to each combustion compartment for heating the carbonaceous material in the activation compartments; individual activation compartments communicate with the atmosphere, e.g. through a common exhaust duct 19 extending from the top of the shaft kiln 10, to discharge the gases emitted during the activation process.
