Abstract

1452867 Reciprocating pumps and motors CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 10 Dec 1974 [17 Dec 1973] 53433/74 Heading F1A [Also in Division F2] In a radial piston pump or motor for operating under high pressures, each cylinder bore is of circular cross-section and progressively decreases in diameter in the direction away from its head end, to compensate for distortion of the cylinder and its piston when under high pressure. A rotor 26 has hollow pistons 27 with piston rings 33 engaging reciprocable cylinders 12 held by rings 54 in sliding engagement with an eccentric track ring 39. The track ring may be fixed, or may be slidably mounted in a housing (18), Fig. 1 (not shown), for adjustment by hydraulic pressure to vary the eccentricity on either side of the neutral position. The piston bores sequentially communicate with distributer ports (46, 47) in pintle 13. The cylinder head 37 has recesses (51, 53), Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) receiving working liquid to provide hydrostatic bearings between the head and track ring 39 and rings 54, the curvature of the bearing surface of head 37 being greater than that of the track ring to produce a hydrodynamic bearing. The conical taper of the cylinder bore and the wall thickness of the piston are arranged to provide suitable working clearances when the piston and the cylinder skirt expand under the high operating pressure.
