Abstract
1452729 Extraction of phenols from aqueous streams E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 24 June 1975 [1 July 1974] 26768/75 Heading C2C A method for the extraction of phenol or nitrophenol(s) or mixtures thereof from aqueous streams in which they are contained comprises the sequential steps of (a) intimately mixing nitrobenzene solvent with the phenolic stream, the pH of the water contained in the intimate admixture being no greater than 5 and the weight ratio of nitrobenzene to phenolic compounds being no less than the saturation ratio (as hereinafter defined); and (b) separating the intimate admixture into a raffinate phase comprising water substantially free of phenol(s) and an extract phase comprising phenolic compounds dissolved in nitrobenzene, the temperature of the extraction being between 5‹ and 75‹ C. By the term "Saturation Ratio" is meant the ratio by weight of solvent to phenol(s) contained in a saturated solution of phenol(s) in the solvent at the extraction temperature.
