Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare colorless, high purity title compound useful as an intermediate of cephalosporin antibiotic substance, easily and economically, by mixing crude 2-thiopheneacetic acid with water at specific temeprature and concentration, separating the mixture into two phases, and extracting the upper phase.
CONSTITUTION: A crude 2-thiopheneacetic acid containing colored impurities, is mixed to water to obtain a mixture containing 2-90 wt%, pref. 5-20 wt% of 2- thiophene-acetic acid. The mixture is left at rest at 20-100°C, pref. 30-80°C, and the mixture is separated into two phases; i.e. lower liquid phase containing 30-90 wt%, pref. 40-80 wt%, esp. pref. 50-70 wt% of 2-thiopheneacetic acid, and an upper liquid phase containing 2-20 wt%, pref. 5-15 wt%, esp. pref. 5-8 wt%, of 2-thiopheneacetic acid. High purity 2-thiopheneacetic acid is separated from the upper phase by conventional method such as extraction, etc.
