Abstract
1357053 2,4,5 - Trichlorophenoxyacetic acid HERCULES Inc 25 Oct 1972 [26 Oct 1971] 49295/72 Heading C2C 2,4,5 - Trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5 - T) contaminated with dioxin is purified by effecting fractional liquid-liquid extraction of said dioxincontaminated 2,4,5-T with a polar liquid solvent and a non-polar liquid solvent, said dioxin and said 2,4,5-T being soluble in both of said solvents, said solvents being immiscible with each other and under the conditions of the extraction yielding rapid breaking polar and non-polar solutions, the volumetric ratio of polar liquid solvent to non-polar liquid solvent being selected so that more 2,4,5-T is dissolved by the polar solvent than by the non-polar solvent while more dioxin is dissolved by the non-polar solvent than by the polar solvent, whereby there are obtained a raffinate fraction comprising 2,4,5-T with dioxin at a substantially reduced weight ratio to the 2,4,5-T, and an extract fraction with a substantial portion of the dioxin content of the original dioxincontaminated 2,4,5-T. The purified 2,4,5-T is recovered from the raffinate, e.g. by distilling off the polar solvent. In the example, the polar solvent is a mixture of acetonitrile (90% by vol.) and water (10% by vol.) and the non- polar solvent is n-hexane.
