Abstract
1451548 Moulding a well block for a metal casting ladle ZIRCONAL PROCESSES Ltd 29 March 1974 14044/74 Heading B5A [Also in Division F4] A moulded and sintered well block (for insertion into a socket in the base of a casting ladle) defines a through passage (for receiving a molten metal discharge nozzle) and comprises an upper part 1 of rectangular external cross-section and a lower part 2 of circular external cross-section, such parts being formed in one piece from a refractory material. The block may be made by forming a slurry of refractory powder(s), a gellable binder and a gellation accelerator, allowing the slurry to set in a mould into the required shape and sintering the shape. The binder and gelation accelerator may be ethyl silicate and amine(s) (e.g. piperidine and dicyclohexylamine) or may be aluminium hydroxyhalide and an acetate or lactate. The refractory powder may be of mullite plus alumina or of magnesite or magnesite based material. References are made to other specifications for suitable amines, binders and refractory powders and for a suitable valve assembly for the nozzle.
