Abstract
1451414 Plastics ducting; Joining ducts H HARGREAVES & SONS Ltd 04034/74 Headings F2G and F2P In fire-resistant ducting formed of reinforced vinyl sheet or sheets, the joint at each longitudinal edge of the sheet(s) is formed by sandwiching abutting edges 18, 20 (Fig. 2) between a pair of metal members 22, 24 which are secured by fastening devices 26. In a first embodiment (Figs. 1, 2) the ducting is formed from two U-shaped sections 10, 12 of vinyl sheet reinforced with asbestos fibres. Sealing material, such as a ceramic based cement, is applied to adjacent edges 18, 20 which are then covered internally and externally of the duct by stainless steel strips 22, 24 which are secured by nickel-copper alloy rivets 26. An elbow piece (not shown) may be formed from two pieces of ducting of the type shown in Fig. 1 but having mitred ends which are joined by the joint shown in Fig. 2. In a second embodiment (Fig. 4) the ducting is formed from four flat sheets 50, 51, 52, 53 of asbestos reinforced vinyl, the sheets being joined at each corner by a pair of L shaped metal strips 54, 55 secured by rivets. This method may be used to form rectangular ducting, an elbow piece as shown in Fig. 4, or a tapered duct section (not shown). Duct sections may be joined end-to-end by the joint shown in Fig. 3. The ends of each duct section are provided with metal flanges 30, 32 secured by rivets 36, and an asbestos gasket 44 is clamped between the flanges 30, 32. Back-up or stiffening flanges 42 (Fig. 1) are provided to strengthen the joint between adjacent duct sections. Alternatively duct sections may be joined by the joint shown in Fig. 2.
