Abstract

1450772 Portable pipe or flange turning machine; grinding DAVID REEKIE & SONS Ltd 7 Dec 1973 [24 Jan 1973] 3564/73 Headings B3T and B3D A portable pipe and flange turning machine of the type having a stationary support member 2 which is securable to a pipe or flange in situ, a rotary carrier 7 mounted on the support member and which carries a tool holder 10 which is radially displaceable as the carrier rotates, characterized in that an annular bearing 14 is provided between the support member and the rotary carrier, the bearing having two pairs of co-operating bearing surfaces 17<SP>1</SP>, 18<SP>1</SP>, and 17, 18 the pairs being inclined with respect to each other and to the axis of rotation of the carrier member. In one embodiment the support member is provided with adjustable clamping means 5 which engages the bore of the pipe or flange and aligns the axis of the pipe or flange with the axis of the support member 2 and hence the rotary carrier 7. The support 5 has an upstanding shaft 3 on which the carrier 7 is mounted and on which it is rotated through gearing by way of a motor 8 and gear-box 9. The tool holder 10 is fed radially as the carrier rotates by way of means 11 which includes a feed screw. In an alternative embodiment shown in Fig. 2 the shaft 3 is omitted and the support member is provided with means to adjust and clamp the member on the outside of the pipe or flange but in other respects the operation of the machine is similar to the embodiment shown in Fig. 1. In addition to the cutting tool 12 to tool holder 10 is adapted to support a grinding attachment (not shown).
