Abstract

1449712 Phenol/formaldehyde resins BASF AG 11 Jan 1974 [13 Jan 1973] 01354/74 Heading C3R [Also in Division Dl] Sulpho-group-containing phenol/formaldehyde condensates in which the sulpho groups are bound aliphatically are prepared by the alkaline condensation of phenol, HCHO, or a HCHO- donating substance, e.g. paraformaldehyde or a HCHO/bisulphite condensate, and a sulphite and/or bisulphite preferably sodium sulphite in the presence of an alkali at 125-200‹ C., the molar ratio of phenol : HCHO : sulphite and/or bisulphite : alkali, (calculated as alkali metal hydroxide) being from 1 : 1 : 0À3 : 0À05 to 1 : 4 : 1À6 : 0À5 the pH of the reaction mixture preferably being from 11-15 and the concentration of the batch preferably being from 20- 50% wt. of dry substance. The alkali is preferably an alkali metal hydroxide. The condensates can be used as dispersing agents in dye compositions which may comprise 2-30% wt. of the condensate, 10-55% wt. of dye and 10-20% wt. of a water-retaining agent, e.g. a glycol.
