Process for the production of lightfast condensation products
The patent No. 215061 relates to a process for the production of lightfast condensation products, in which 1 mol of a sulfonated phenol or phenol mixture is reacted with 1-1, 5 moles of urea and 1.7 to 2.2 moles of formaldehyde and the resulting condensates with phenols and Formaldehyde aftertreated.
It has now been found that, in a modification of this process, lightfast condensation products are also obtained if the condensates obtained in the first process stage are aftertreated with sulfonated or sulfomethylated phenols and formaldehyde instead of phenols and formaldehyde. The amounts of phenol derivatives and formaldehyde to be used in the second condensation stage can, depending on the intended use of the condensation products, be varied within wide limits.
For the production of tanning agents, for 1 mole of the phenolsulfonic acid condensed in the first stage, usually 0.5-1.5 moles of phenol derivative and 0.3-2 moles of formaldehyde are used, while good dispersants are used with 0.5-5 moles by post-condensation Phenol derivative and 0.3-7 moles of formaldehyde, based on 1 mole of phenolsulfonic acid originally used.
The phenol derivatives mentioned can be obtained by known processes by sulfonating or sulfomethylating phenols which do not contain any condensed ring systems. Examples are low molecular weight phenols such as halophenols and especially cresols and the phenol itself,

mix use.
The condensation products obtained by the new process, like the products obtained by the process of the parent patent, are distinctly white tannins. They can be adapted to the requirements of the tanning process in a known manner using inorganic or organic acids.
The new condensation products produce white leathers with excellent lightfastness during tanning.
They can also be used very advantageously as tanning agents for chrome retanning; Excellent leathers of very light color and excellent lightfastness are also obtained. Their good compatibility with other synthetic tanning agents should also be emphasized.
The condensation products obtainable according to the invention are temperature-resistant and can be stored indefinitely; they do not tend to crystallize and can be converted into the solid form without reducing their valuable properties by known drying processes, such as evaporation in a vacuum or roller or spray drying. The products of the process are preferably dried after they have been neutralized with alkaline agents, e.g. B. with ammonia or alkali metal hydroxides, but carried out with acids before setting. After setting with solid acids or acid donors, e.g.
B. with sodium bisulphate, oxalic acid, adipic acid, citric acid or mixtures of such acidic reacting substances, resulting in powdery, non-hygroscopic tannins that are easily and clearly soluble in cold water and that have the same excellent properties as the liquid products.
