1449512 Brake discs; cooling brakes PONTA-MOUSSON SA 29 Nov 1973 [15 Dec 1972] 55453/73 Heading F2E A brake disc comprises two plates 1, 2 interconnected by a plurality of bands 3<SP>a</SP>, 3<SP>b</SP>, 3<SP>c</SP> of cross-members 3, the cross-members 3 of each band being substantially evenly spaced apart. In the embodiment of Figs. 1, 2, there are three concentric bands 3<SP>a</SP>, 3<SP>b</SP>, 3<SP>c</SP> of circularsection cross-members 3 with the cross-members of the centre band 3<SP>b</SP> being staggered in relation to the cross-members of the other bands 3<SP>a</SP>, 3<SP>c</SP>, and the spacing between adjacent cross-members 3 of each or any two bands being of the order of magnitude of their mean cross-sectional dimension. The plate 1 is extended internally by a radial flange 4 of increased thickness in which are provided apertures 5 for fixing the disc to a hub or other member to be braked. The cross-members 3 act to assist cooling of the disc during braking by providing an increased surface area and by producing a swirling flow of air. In the embodiment of Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) the second plate 2 is also extended inwardly by a flange (6) which has the same thickness as cylindrical cross-members (7) which interconnect the two flanges in the region of each fixing aperture (5) which also extends through the cross-member (7) and the second plate (2). In modifications the cross-members may be hexagonal or square or have an oblique direction with respect to the axis of the disc. Bands of cross-members may be evenly spaced apart in the radial direction, with the cross-members of different bands having different sections.
