1495518 Rail vehicle wheel with brake disc W BUSCH and H FRIEDERICHS 17 Dec 1974 [18 Dec 1973] 54349/74 Heading F2E A rail vehicle wheel has a wheel disc 11, at least one side of which wheel disc carries an annular brake disc, e.g. 14, whose side facing the wheel disc is provided with radiallyextending cooling fins 23, at least one resilientlydeformable clamp 15 which serves as a retaining element for the brake disc 14 and which grips the brake disc 14 from behind and engages the outer and/or inner periphery of the disc under initial stress, the clamp being positively secured to the wheel disc by means of one or more bolts 20, screws or the like, and a connection, provided between the brake disc 14 on the one hand and the wheel disc 11 on the other hand, which acts to prevent rotation of the brake disc 14 relative to the wheel disc 11 and the clamp 15. As shown on the right, the clamp 15 engages outer and inner peripheries of the brake disc, three clamps (two not shown) in all are provided, and they form a unit with a central ring 18 through which the bolts 20 extend. The connection to prevent relative rotation referred to above takes the form of radially-directed and axially-parallel surfaces 22 on each bolt head 21, co-operating in each case with a radial groove formed by two adjacent cooling fins 23. The free end of each bolt 20 carries a nut and is accommodated in a region 30 of the back of the left hand brake disc 24 where the fins have been cut away. On the left of Fig. 1, the clamps 25 engage only the outer periphery of disc 24, and four are provided, forming a unit with ring 27. Alternate bolts must lie with their heads 21 in brake discs 14 and 24 respectively, where both brake discs are provided. The disc-bolt connection of Fig. 1a is used also for disc 24. Segmented (e.g. halved) brake discs may be used, in which case they may be removed without removing the wheel from its axle. Instead of the arrangement of Fig. 1a, each clamp may be provided with a latching device extending between cooling fins or recesses in the disc.
