Abstract

1421952 Ventilated brake discs GIRLING Ltd 9 May 1974 [9 May 1973] 22064/73 Heading F2E A ventilated disc 11 for a disc brake comprises a mounting portion 16, Fig. 1, an intermediate portion 17, and two side pates 12, 13 sandwiching between them a plurality of vanes 14 and each side plate comprising a braking surface portion 15, in which disc the braking surface portions 15 are joined to the mounting portion 16 by the intermediate portion 17 which is apertured (at 18, Fig. 2) to leave webs 19, at least some of the vanes (e.g. 21, Fig. 2) extending from between the braking surface portions 15 to the mounting portion in a non-radial direction and forming the webs 19 so as to allow for expansion of the braking surface portions 15 by flexure of the vanes joining the mounting portion to the braking surface portions. As shown, vanes 21 are tangential to the mounting portion 16. The disc is of cast iron and the mounting portion 16 is in the form of a collar; after casting, the disc is machined to form a countersunk hollow 23 and bolt holes 24, Fig. 1. A separate ring 26 is secured to a road wheel 27, Fig. 3, by bolts 28, and tapped holes in this ring receive bolts 29 (see also Fig. 2), extending through the bolt holes 24 to secure the disc. The brake includes a caliper 25. The mounting portion may alternatively be in the form of a series of bosses, each with a hole 24, joined to each other indirectly by the side plates. The mounting portion may be on the outer, instead of the inner, rim of the disc, in which ease the webs 19 are preferably tangential to the braking surface portions.
