Abstract

1449462 Insulating pipes FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd 4 Feb 1974 [5 Feb 1973] 5632/73 Heading F2P [Also in Division F4] A method of cladding a water cooled pipe 1, e.g. to form a skid rail for use in a furnace, includes the steps of surrounding part of the pipe 1 with a channel shaped member 2 of generally inverted U-shaped cross-section, surrounding the remainder with a closure plate 3 spanning the open end of the "U" and which cannot be removed radially of the pipe 1 without breakage of the plate 3 or channel member 2, and at least partially filling the interspace between the pipe 1 and the channel member 2 and plate 3 with heat insulating refactory material 5, e.g. felted or woven blankets of inorganic fibres such as glass fibre, rock wool, mineral wool, ceramic fibres or aluminosilicate fibres. The channel member 2 and plate 3 are both preferably made of refactory cements or cement bonded refactory materials. In a first embodiment (Fig. 1) the plate 3 is locked in position by a cement "key" 4 formed between a tapered surface 8 of the member 2 and a groove 6 in the edge of the plate 3. The plate is held in position while the cement 4 sets by rods 7 engaging the grooves 6. In a modification (not shown) the channel member 2 and plate 3 surround two pipes. In a second embodiment (Fig. 3) the plate 12 is locked in the channel member 11 by interengaging inclined faces 13, 14, the plate 12 being slid longitudinally into the member 11 and then being secured by cement fillets 15. In a third embodiment (not shown) the plate is held in position by inwardly directed flanges formed at the free ends of the U-shaped member.
