Blocks, bricks or slabs for lining furnaces are made by casting a mass of refractory material bonded by cement to the required shape and then applying directly to one or more faces thereof before the mass sets or layer of heat-insulating material also bonded by cement, whereby the layers become bonded together without interposing a bonding layer therebetween. The refractory layer may consist of cement bonded refractory material made by mixing Portland cement or the equivalent rapid hardening cement with correctly graded refractory grogs, the resultant mix being cast into the required shapes. Before the shaped mass sets there is cast thereon a' layer of insulating material made, for example, by mixing Portland cement or rapid-hardening cement with pre-fired insulating grog, vermiculite, asbestos or natural volcanic rock, the cement content being kept to a minimum. To assist bonding the layers may be secured together by steel ties, anchors, or ceramic keys.
