Abstract

1449424 Continuous casting GENERAL MOTORS CORP 5 Sept 1974 [27 Sept 1973] 38916/74 Heading B3F A mould assembly 22 is attached, as by bolts and a cement seal 19 to a melt-holding vessel 10, around an outlet 14 at the vessel base, by way of a spacer ring 24 (which, like an outlet block 18, may be of zirconia) located between a first (Cu alloy) portion 28 of the mould and its (boron nitride) mouthpiece 26 so that a slag-trap chamber 66 is formed; the mould portion 28 and the remaining portion 30 (which may be graphitelined) may be of circular or oval or rectangular, triangular or other polygonal shape in section; they decrease in sectional area towards the mould outlet. A metal starter sleeve 50 with sealing rings 52 of graphite tape is fitted in the mould portion 28 before the mouthpiece 26 is press-fitted in and clamped, with the ring 24, by a bolted ring 58, before the mould assembly 22 is bolted to the vessel 10. After preheating the whole assembly, a starter bar 38 is inserted from the mould outlet end. It comprises a hollow shank 40 capped by an insert 42 and bears a chill ring 44 on a bolt 46 with A1 wire 48 on it for killing the first steel poured. A rod 56 screwed into the bolt 46 supports a fusible plug 54 for fitting into the vessel outlet 14 to delay entry of the poured steel into the mould 28, 30, to allow slag on the steel to rise above the outlet 14. The steel, before solidifying in the sleeve 50 and around the bolt 46, melts both the fusible plug 54 and its support rod 56. The bar 38 is then withdrawn a short distance by rollers, started by an operator or by an electronic control at a signal from a thermocouple 27 which will indicate a slight temperature difference between pull and dwell. After a dwell period (during which some reverse movement may be applied) to allow a segment of steel skin to form between the mouthpiece 26 and the starter sleeve 50, the pull and dwell cycle is continued to form fresh successive segments of skin. A water jacket 32 surrounding the mould 28, 30 contains a baffle 39.
