Abstract

1449080 Anodizing in an aqueous-organic bath UNITED STATES ENERGY RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ADMINISTRATION 28 Nov 1974 [8 Jan 1974] 51547/74 Heading C7B [ Also in Division C2] Nb, Ta, Ti, W, Be, U, A1 or their alloys are anodized in an aqueous bath containing an organic polar material and a quaternary ammonium salt containing a complex metal-containing anion. The organic material may be EtOH, MeOh, PrOH or ethylene glycol and constitute 1-80% by vol. of the total solvent. The quaternary compound may be of Formula (R 4 N)(M x O y H z ) where R is C1-4 alkyl and/or aryl, M is Nb, Ta or Ti, there being at least two metal atoms present, and x, y and z having values dependent on the valency of M, examples being tetramethylammonium niobate, tantalate and titanate. The metal may be first cleaned e.g. (1) in detergent followed by vapour degrease; (2) sequentially in alkali, trichlorethylene (with ultrasonic vibration) and EtOH; or (3) for Al and its alloys, sequentially in trichlorethylene, NaOH, HNO 3 and H 2 SO 4 followed by brief anodizing in the H 2 SO 4 and soaking therein after anodizing. Anodizing may be at 0-60‹C, at 150-500V, using a c.d. 0À1-10 mA/cm<SP>2</SP>, and a Pt, Ta or stainless steel cathode. The bath produces a gelatinous layer which may be washed off leaving a thin barrier anodic layer (up to 10<SP>-7</SP>m thick). The metal may be reanodized.
