Abstract

1449061 Sodium perborate DEUTSCHE GOLD-UND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT 31 Aug 1973 [2 Sept 1972] 41008/73 Heading C1A Abrasion-resistant sodium perborate tetrahydrate is made in one or more crystallization stages by (1) introducing a supersaturated perborate tetrahydrate solution containing 200- 700 g. perborate tetrahydrate per litre into a suspension of perborate seeding nuclei in perborate solution containing 100-500 g. of nuclei per litre, the temperature of the mixture being 20-40‹ C., the introduction being at such a speed that not more than 30 g. perborate are crystallized per minute per m.<SP>2</SP> of apparent seeding area, and such that the crystallization ratio is not more than 25% per stage while the total crystallization ratio is not more than 100%; (2) cooling to 15‹ C. within 15-30 mins. of the end of crystallization and subsequently recovering at least a portion of the product. The crystallization ratio is defined as grams perborate added/grams perborate initially present x 100% and is a measure of the increase in size of the nuclei. A crystallization stage is completed by ending the supply of supersaturated solution or removing the suspension from the crystallization zone.
