Abstract

1447674 Isocyanate modified unsaturated polyesters and epoxy resins DAINIPPON INK & CHEMICALS Inc 21 Nov 1973 [29 Nov 1972] 54092/73 Headings C3R C3B and C3P Modified unsaturated polyesters and modified unsaturated epoxy resins are prepared by reacting (i) an unsaturated polyester derived from a glycol containing a bisphenol A nucleus and an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride or an oligomeric unsaturated dicarboxylic acid containing 2 or 4 ester groups in the chain and obtained by reacting an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride with a glycol or (ii) an unsaturated epoxy resin derived from a diglycidyl or dimethylglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, a monoalkyl ester of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or an oligomeric unsaturated dicarboxylic acid as defined above with (iii) 0À1 to 5% by weight, based on (i) or (ii), of an isocyanate at 30-100‹ C. until the product is substantially free from isocyanate groups. The reaction may be carried out in solution in a polymerizable monomer, e.g. styrene. The examples describe reacting (i) unsaturated polyesters derived from pimaric or maleic acid, 1,3-butylene glycol or dipropylene glycol and the ethylene oxide or propylene oxide adducts of bisphenol A or (ii) epoxy resins derived from the diglycidyl or dimethylglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and acrylic acid, methacrylic acid or an oligomeric dicarboxylic acid derived from pimaric acid and dipropylene glycol with (iii) tolylene diisocyanate, xylene diisocyanate, hexamethylene diisocyanate, adduct of xylene diisocyanate and n-butanol and the adduct of tolylene diisocyanate and propylene glycol, in solution in styrene and subsequently curing the resins.
