Abstract

1442511 Radiation curable resins VIANOVA KUNSTHARZ AG 24 April 1974 [24 April 1973] 18001/74 Headings C3B C3P and C3R A process for preparing a radiation curable resin comprises reacting a resin containing free hydroxy and/or carboxyl groups with 10 to 100 mol. per cent, based on the glycidyl reactive hydrogen atoms in the resin, of glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate and reacting the product so obtained with a compound containing one free isocyanate group obtained by reacting diisocyanate with a polymerizable monomer containing the group and at least one hydrogen atom reactive to an isocyanate group. The resins used in the examples are (i) an epoxy resin based on bisphenol A and reacted with acrylic acid, (ii) an unsaturated polyester derived from fumaric acid, phthalic anhydride, propylene glycol and diethylene glycol, dissolved in styrene, (iii) a dehydrated castor oil fatty acids alkyd resin dissolved in methyl methacrylate and (iv) an addition polymer obtained from acrylic acid, styrene, ethyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate; these resins, after reaction with glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate, are reacted with a solution in methyl methacrylate of the reaction product of tolylene diisocyanate with (a) hydroxyethyl methacrylate, (b) hydroxyethyl acrylate, (c) hydroxypropyl acrylate, (d) acrylic acid or (e) monobutyl maleate. The resins may be coated on aluminium panels and exposed to an electron beam.
