Abstract
1447656 Breaking oil-in-water emulsions FRIED KRUPP HUTTENWERKE AG 19 Dec 1973 [18 Jan 1973 15 Sept 1973] 58854/73 Heading C5E Spent oil-in-water emulsion containing a non- ionic emulsifier and an anion active emulsifier is broken by adding an aqueous solution, at pH 4-9, of an electrolyte consisting of at least one Group Ia and/or Group IIa metal salt, heating the emulsion to boiling, adding before or during the heating an iron or aluminium salt, blowing air through the mixture until the emulsifiers are destroyed, and allowing the mixture to stand and separate into oil and water phases. 1-20 kg. of sodium chloride or of magnesium chloride and 0À2-2 kg. of ferrous sulphate heptahydrate can be added per cubic metre of emulsion. A spent emulsion, from the cold rolling of pickled metal and containing 1-10 wt. per cent oil, can be treated by heating at its boiling point with steam for 3 hours, blowing in air to oxidize divalent iron to trivalent iron, and leaving the mixture to stand.
