Abstract

1447506 Ignition systems SIEMENS AG 1 Aug 1973 [1 Aug 1972] 36686/73 Heading F1B An ignition system for an internal combustion engine comprises capacitive means 1, 3 operable to provide two successive discharges for lengthening the duration of an ignition spark, an ignition transformer 7 the primary winding 6 of which is connected to receive the discharges, switching means 5 for initiating at least the first of the discharges and control means for ensuring that the second discharge commences after the first has been at least substantially completed. As shown the control means comprises an inductance 21 coupled to the capacitive means to delay the second discharge. The switching means 5 comprises a thyristor. In a modification, (not shown), two thyristors are employed. The ignition timing may be controlled centrifugally or by a vacuum controller for the interrupter plate. Alternatively the timing of the discharges of the auxiliary capacitor may be controlled by a device including a digital or analogue store which contains data relating to the manifold pressure or speed of the engine. In a further modification the capacitor 3 may be dispensed with, the capacitor 1 being arranged to be recharged after its initial discharge during the non-conducting phase of the ignition thyristor and thereafter discharged again into the ignition transformer.
