Abstract

1446716 Extruding thermosetting plastics A HEGGENSTALLER 29 Oct 1973 [30 Oct 1972] 50249/73 Heading B5A A mixture of particulate vegetable waste material and thermosetting binder is hardened, after extrusion from a conical or wedge shaped die passage into the passage of a tube in which it is cured, the tube comprising longitudinally split parts which are releasably secured together. The waste material may comprise wood sawdust, clippings, shavings, or comminuted parts of flax, hemp, seaweed, bark, or waste from the processing of cane sugar and rice, vegetable shells and peelings. The binder may be a cold setting resin, or may comprise phenolic resin to which an emulsion and accelerator are added and mixed in a weight ratio of 37À5 parts binding agent with 100 parts wood shavings (dry weight). The extrusion may be effected Fig. 4 (not shown) into the tubes successively delivered by a conveyer into coaxial alignment with the extruder outlet, from which the extrusion is cut, with the filled tubes being removed, laterally or axially, for curing of the material, either after storage or directly during transmission on a rotary conveyer through a curing unit. In the Fig. 1 embodiment, extrusion is effected from a tapered die 4, of an extrusion press comprising a piston reciprocated by an eccentric 3, with the extrusion being delivered, e.g. along guides, across a space 5 and through and in contact with the curing tube 6 under the extrusion pressure, which is accentuated by applying a braking force by means 10, such as clamping jaws or a narrowing of the section of the tube 6. The space 5 facilitates removal of incompletely compressed material at the commencement of extrusion. The unit 6 is vented for the escape of curing moisture and is provided with a heating coil, or infra red heaters, or steam jackets, and the separable parts are releasably clamped by bolts to facilitate release of extrudate jammed therein. The unit 6 may include conveyers assisting passage of the extrudate and may define a circular rod section, or a channel section as in Fig. 3. The unit 6 may be followed by cooling means and a cutter. The moulded product may comprise spacing of distance blocks for pallets, slats for fences, hand rails, toys, furniture parts, boards or panels.
