Abstract

1446433 Needled fibrous laminates NORTHERN BLANKETS Ltd 25 Sept 1973 [28 Sept 1972] 44816/72 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions D1 and H5] A laminated fabric is made by feeding non- woven fibrous layers 21, 22 under a reciprocating needle bar 30, the needles 31 of which are preferably arranged to effect needling along transversely-spaced strips, from time to time moving the layers relative to the stroke of the needles to provide non-laminated portions, a control device 50 being provided to distribute co-ordinated control signals to means for driving the needling bar and to means for moving the layers relative to the needling bar. As shown, the layers are guided between apertured plates 35, 36 for needling which are withdrawn from the needles by a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder 38. The needling strips may be staggered and the laminated material may be cut at 39 across the non- laminated portions to provide shells for electric blankets, in which a heating wire is disposed around the needled strips before the edges of the shell are sealed by adhesive or braiding. One or more auxiliary needle pads 40 may be intermittently brought into operation by the device 50 to provide needling between individual strips, which needling provides a retaining constriction for a thermostat on the heating wire in the blanket. The layers 21, 22 may comprise rayon, wool, acrylic, nylon or polyester fibres and need not have identical properties. After lamination they may be raised. An intermediate layer 27, e.g. scrim, cheesecloth or foamed plastics or rubber, may be provided. Other uses: heating pads, underfloor heating.
