Abstract
1446357 Boring earth RUCKER CO 20 Nov 1973 53847/73 Heading E1F Interposed between a travelling block 19 and drill string support 59 is a compensator for overcoming the effect of rise and fall of a drilling barge. The compensator comprises cylinders 77, 78 fixed to the travelling block frame 51 and having pistons 176, 178 with rods 79, 80 carrying pulleys 81, 82, and chains 83, 84 fixed at the ends to the block frame and the string support, the lower parts of the cylinders being supplied with gas from tanks 114. The tanks are connected to air compressors 93, 94 so that air is available at a junction 102, a standby tank 133 also being connected to the junction through a pressure multiplier 146. From the junction a line 159 leads to branch lines 161, 162 leading to the bottoms of the cylinders 78, 77. Oil 187, 205 in vessels 188, 206 is connected by dipper pipes 184, 204 to the tops of the cylinders 77, 78, the air above the oil being maintained at pressure by air from the branch lines and oil from the tops of the cylinders discharging back to the vessels through adjustable orifices 192, 208. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown) two banks of tanks each with its own compressor are connected to the junction in parallel.
