Abstract
1445732 Light guides BICC Ltd 20 June 1974 [21 June 1973] 29517/73 Heading G2J The guide comprises one or more fibres surrounded by a protective sheath, the space between the fibre(s) and the sheath being filled with a greasy medium to prevent damage to the fibre(s) when flexed. In one embodiment Fig. 1, optical fibres 2 are placed in a stranded layer around a steel core 1 and are covered by a polyethylene sheath 4. Petroleum jelly 3 fills the interstices between the fibres, core and sheath. In another embodiment Fig. 2, a steel core 11 is surrounded by a stranded layer of optical bundles 12 and an outer protective sheath 14. Each bundle 12 comprises optical fibres 15 and non-optical fibres 16 in a covering 18 of extruded polyethylene. Petroleum jelly 13, 17 is provided between the bundles 12 and fibres 15, 16 respectively.
