Abstract

1445501 Sintered hard metal TOYOTA JIDOSHA KOGYO KK 7 March 1974 [4 June 1973] 10265/74 Headings C7A and C7D A sintered cermet is formed by blending a powder consisting of TiC and 10-70 wt. per cent of TiN with a metal powder consisting of one or more of Fe, Ni, Co, Cr, Mo and Mn in an inert liquid, drying and moulding the mixture and sintering above the melting point of the metal in vacuo or inert or reducing atmosphere, the TiC and TiN forming 15-80 wt. per cent of the sintered cermet. The mixture may be first moulded under a pressure of at least 500 kg/cm<SP>2</SP> at room temperature and then sintered or it may be simultaneously moulded and sintered at a pressure exceeding 50 kg/cm<SP>2</SP> and a temperature above the melting point of the metal. Hot extrusion moulding may be used. The initial powders preferably have a particle size below 5 microns.
