Abstract

1445327 Overbased materials; lubricants CHEVRON RESEARCH CO 14 Aug 1973 [18 Aug 1972] 02559/76 Divided out of 1440373 Headings C4X and C5F A multi-functional lubricating oil additive comprises a mixture of sulphurized metal phenates having an average atomic ratio of sulphur to metal between 1 and 4 and is made by reacting an alkylphenol that has 8 to 35 carbon atoms in the alkyl group with sulphur and an oxide or hydroxide of Ca, Sr or Ba or a mixture of two or more of these or magnesium methoxide or magnesium methyl carbonate in the presence of a common solvent but in the absence of an alkaline-earth carboxylate. The alkyl group may be derived from tetrapropylene, and the common solvent may be 1,4-butandiol, ethylene glycol or glycol ethers. A diluent, e.g. a mineral lubricating oil, may also be present. A lubricating composition comprises this additive and a base oil which may be mineral or synthetic (many listed), and may contain other, known additives.
