Abstract

1299253 Lubricants containing overbased sulphonates ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 12 May 1970 22900/70 Heading C5F [Also in Division C2] The invention comprises a process of preparing a highly basic detergent additive in which to a reaction vessel, containing a substantially anhydrous reaction mixture comprising an oil solution of (a) an oil-soluble sulphonic acid or an alkaline earth metal sulphonate (b) an aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon (c) methanol, the volume ratios of components (b) to (c) being between 30 : 70 and 80 : 20 (d) from 1À0 to 2À5% by weight based on the weight of oil of an ammonium halide, and (e) not more than 40% by weight based on the total weight of oil plus component (a) of calcium oxide, carbon dioxide is introduced until no more is absorbed whilst the reaction vessel is maintained with an absolute pressure of between 1À1 and 3À5 kg/cm<SP>2</SP>. A long chain mono- or dicarboxylic acid, e.g. derived from polyethylene, polypropylene or polyisobutene can be included in the reaction mixture. The additives may be used in mineral or synthetic lubricating oil compositions. In the preferred compositions the proportion of detergent additive is between 0À01 and 10% by weight of the lubricating oil.
