Abstract

1520083 Overbased materials; lubricants CHEVRON RESEARCH CO 7 June 1976 [9 June 1975 10 May 1976] 23503/76 Headings C4X and C5F [Also in Divisions C2 and C3] Lubricating compositions, and lubricant additive concentrates, contain an oil-soluble Group I or Group II metal or lead salt (including overbased Group II metal salts) of an ethyl sulphonic acid substituted on either carbon atom of the ethyl group by a substantially saturated (defined) aliphatic hydrocarbyl group having at least 25 carbon atoms. The latter group may be derived from a polymer of a C 2-30 mono-olefin. The lubricating oil may be natural or synthetic, and may contain the usual conventional additives. In Example 9, the calcium salt of polyisobutenylethyl sulphonic acid is added to a mineral lubricating oil also containing a conventional succinimide dispersant, a calcium phenate and zinc dithiophosphate. In Example 8, an overbased salt is prepared by carbonating a mixture of Ca(OH) 2 and the calcium salt of polyisobutenylethyl sulphonic acid.
