Abstract

1444832 Fibre reinforced resin material A SPAAY 14 May 1974 [19 May 1973] 21398/74 Heading B2E [Also in Division B5] A fibre reinforced resin material comprises a layer of resin composition on which is deposited, in sequence, a layer of chopped fibres, a layer of endless fibres in tangled form, a further layer of chopped fibres, and another resin layer. Further intermediate resin layers may be applied between each chopped fibre layer and the tangled layer. The layer of endless fibres may only cover a central strip occupying 75 to 80% of the width of the material; the amount of chopped fibres being increased in areas free of endless fibres to compensate for lack of tangled fibres. The fibres may be of polyamide, sisal or, preferably, glass. A suitable process for forming the material provides a sheet 2 on a conveyor belt 2 onto which is fed a resin composition from hopper 1. Glass rovings 5 are supplied to glass cutting devices 4, 10 to form the chopped fibre layers and to a distributing device 8 to form the tangled fibre layer. The further intermediated layers of resin composition flow from slot nozzles 7, 9. The other resin composition layer (not shown in Fig.) is then applied. The material is then fed through a plurality of offset rollers to bond the resin with the glass fibres.
