Abstract

1444153 Alumina alloy conductor wires BICC Ltd 8 Aug 1974 [9 Aug 1973] 37870/73 Heading C7A [Also in Division H1A] A conductor wire with a composition of 0À3-1À0 Fe 0À08-1À0 Cu 0-0À15 Si 98À0-99À5 Al with traces of impurities has improved tensile properties over known materials with similar iron contents, making the alloy suitable for telephone, or other overhead electrical cables where high strength is required. The preferred method of manufacture is by continuous casting, rolling and drawing to wire, which may be clad with copper to facilitate joining, and insulated, e.g. with a layer of extruded plastics material, the insulated conductors being contained in a waterproof outer sheath. A water inpermeable medium, such as petroleum jelly, may fill the interstices between the wires and the sheath. Two examples of conductor wire use are described, a telecommunication cable with a multiplacity of insulated conductors within an extruded polyethelene sheath, the interstices filled with petroleum jelly, and an overhead conductor consisting of a stranded steel core with three layers of conductor wires.
