Abstract

1444104 Extruding; working at specified temperatures ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AB 11 Dec 1973 [18 Dec 1972] 57351/73 Headings B3P and B3V A tube of zirconium or zirconium alloy is made by hydrostatic extrusion of a heated tubular billet 10 with an extrusion ratio exceeding 50 : 1 and the heating is such that the temperature of the tube is between 750‹ and 1100‹ C. when it leaves the extrusion die. The billet may be sheathed in copper 11. A suitable billet temperature is at least 250‹ C., preferably 500‹ to 550‹ C. The extrusion ratio may be as high as 125 : 1. By keeping the temperature of the zirconium or zirconium alloy below a critical range of 1100-1150‹ C. the orientation of the hydride platelets is unaffected. The extruded tube may be cooled as it leaves the die to prevent the formation of zirconium-copper alloys.
