Abstract

1443227 Mineral mining machines COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 19 Nov 1974 [7 Dec 1973] 56746/73 Heading E1F A ranging drum shearer type mining machine for winning a strip of mineral by separate roof and floor cutting stages is steered by sensing the cutting horizon or rock boundary associated with one of the cutting stages to control the cutting horizon associated with the other cutting stage. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the thickness of the roof coal band 13 is sensed during the floor cutting stage by a nucleonic sensing and detecting probe 20 to control the cutting horizon 16. Other parameters may be sensed, in addition to that of the roof coal band thickness, to steer the mining machine, these include the position of the machine along the working face, the position of the mine roof 12 with respect to the top of the machine, the position of the cutter drum 2' during the floor cutting stage with respect to the conveyor, the inclination of the machine in a direction normal to the conveyor, and the position of the cutter drum 2' with respect to the machine. The sensed parameters are fed to a control means 40, e.g. an analogue or digital computor. A restriction of the adjustment of the position of the cutter head relative to the conveyor is imposed to avoid large steps in the floor 9. The cutter drum winning the upper coal may lead the machine so that the probe can sense the cutting horizon associated with the roof cutting stage during both directions of traverse of the machine. The steering method may also be applied to a double end ranging drum shearer.
