Abstract
1,203,362. Mining machines. EICKHOFF MASCHINENFABRIK U EISENGIESSEREI m.b.H. GEB. 16 Feb., 1968 [27 April, 1967], No. 7707/68. Heading E1F. [Also in Division G1] A mining machine comprises a cutter having its height controlled by means including sensing means for sensing an adjacent rock stratum and supported by a carrier connected to the body of the machine for movement therewith along a mine floor or roof, the carrier being arranged to swing about a horizontal axis and to be held in any selected operative position relative to the axis. The machine 2 travels along a face conveyor 1 and has two cutters 3, 4 for respectively cutting the floor and the roof of a mine, and each cutter has a space clearing member 5 which can be swung over to either side thereof and carries a detector 6 having a radioactive element to emit radiation to scan the floor or roof, the detectors 6 controlling the height of the cutters by means of jacks 7. Each detector, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), has Geiger-Muller counting tubes and the radiation source on a member which is spring-urged into engagement with the floor or roof and is streamlined to reduce resistance by debris to travel. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the detector 6 controls the raising or lowering of the frame of the machine. The detector may emit sound waves and have a corresponding sensor.
