Abstract

1443204 Vacuum pumps for pipetting OXFORD LABORATORIES 19 July 1973 [21 Aug 1972] 34551/73 Heading F1N [ Also in Division B 1] In a pipetting device wherein a spring 55 moves a piston 49 in a direction 71 to increase the volume of a chamber 47 and thus draw liquid into a disposable tip 13, the suction stroke of the piston is adjustable and to ensure the subsequent complete discharge of the liquid the delivery stroke can be greater than the suction stroke. At the end of the delivery stroke a shoulder stop 21 on a plunger 19 connected to the piston 49 abuts a surface 23. By laterally displacing the plunger 19 the stop 21 is disengaged from the surface 23 to allow further plunger movement until a knob 33 abuts the surface 23. The stroke is adjusted by appropriately positioning a block 59 along a slot 65 and tightening a screw 61. A collar 57 on the plunger co-operates with the block to determine the stroke. In an alternative construction, Fig. 6 (not shown), the collar 57 is movable axially along the plunger to adjust the stroke. The piston 49 slides in a glass liner 45.
