Abstract

1443173 Bitumen coatings; bitumen emulsion EVODE Ltd 11 April 1974 [9 March 1973] 11420/73 Headings B1V and B2E A bituminous coating is applied to a surface by forming a coating on the surface of a bituminous emulsion containing a water soluble alginate and spraying onto the coating, while it is still wet, with an aqueous solution of a di- or tri-valent metal salt, whereby the coating is rendered resistant to rainfall. The emulsion may also contain thickeners (e.g. polyacrylates or bentonite) and/or fillers (e.g. asbestos fibres), and may be applied by brush roller or spray. In an example a 50 wt % emulsion of bitumen of sodium alginate, and 6% by wt. of asbestos fibres was brushed onto a flat concrete roof, then the coating was sprayed with a CaCl 2 solution.
