Abstract

1443152 Pipe couplings PENLON Ltd 10 July 1973 [10 July 1972] 32215/72 Heading F2G [Also in Division A5] A ventilator comprises a coupling unit including an air inlet pipe 1, an exhaust pipe 2, forward and return pipes 4, 5 for connection to a patient, a pipe 3 for connection to a bellows and an exhaust valve between the pipes 2, 5, the unit being detachably mounted in the ventilator. The means for attaching the unit to a wall 15 in the ventilator includes a flange (11), Fig. 1 (not shown), and a groove (12) in the unit and a plate 18 mounted on the wall 15 and housing a rotatable lever 19 having an aperture complementary to the flange (11). The flange (11) is located in the plate 18 while the pipe 1 fits in a bevelled tube 20 on the wall 15, and the lever 19 is rotated whereupon a cam on the lever 19 engages the groove (12) and forces the unit on to an 0-ring 17 to form a seal. An actuating rod (13) with a ferromagnetic boss (14) projects through an aperture 16 in the wall 15 and cooperates with magnetic means mounted on a piston-rod of an air cylinder and operates the exhaust valve. In operation air through the inlet pipe inflates the bellows while the boss (14) keeps the exhaust valve open. The magnetic means then closes this valve and the bellows contracts and drives air into the patient's lungs through the pipe 4. This cycle is repeated. Low resistance one-way valves in the pipes are accessible by removing blocks 7, 8 from a main block 9, by unscrewing nuts 10.
