Abstract

1443058 Ignition systems; timing ignition NIPPONDENSO CO Ltd 2 Oct 1973 45927/73 Heading F1B [Also in Division H1N] An ignition system for a rotary internal combustion engine comprises a first ignition signal generator 5, a first ignition coil 3 controlled by the first ignition signal generator and a first pair of sparking plugs Ta, Tb connected with the first ignition coil, a second ignition signal generator 6 operable independently of the first ignition signal generator to generate ignition signals at time instants different from those of the first ignition signal generator, a second ignition coil 4 controlled by the second ignition signal generator and a second pair of sparking plugs La, Lb connected in series with the second ignition coil, first ignition time control means (not shown) coupled to the first ignition signal generator for varying the time of ignition signal generation by the first ignition signal generator in accordance with an operating condition of the engine and second ignition time control means (not shown) coupled to the second ignition signal generator for varying the time of ignition signal generation by the second ignition signal generator in accordance with an operating condition of the engine. As shown a distributer brush 11a is connected between the first ignition coil and the first pair of sparking plugs but the distributer may be omitted although the ignition signal generators are shown as circuit breakers 5, 6 it is stated that electromagnetic signal generators associated with transistors or thyristors may be employed. The construction of a distributer assembly comprising coaxially arranged circuit breakers 5, 6 is described with reference to Fig. 2, (not shown). The timing is controlled centrifugally and by engine vacuum.
