Abstract

1441324 Etching; etching apparatus PHILIP A HUNT CHEMICAL CORP 7 Sept 1973 [7 Sept 1972] 42230/73 Heading B6J [Also in Division G1] An etching bath 10 for etching metallic copper using aqueous ammonium chloride/ammonium hydroxide solution includes a specific gravity sensor 30 arranged to actuate a pair of pumps 12 for pumping fresh solution into and spent solution out of the etching bath when the specific gravity reaches a predetermined value, the specific gravity being a measure of the copper content. The sensor 30 includes a support unit 36 enclosing a magnetically operable reed switch 38, an arm 40 pivoted to the support unit at 34, a magnet 42 on the arm for operating the switch, and a float body 52 at the end of the arm. The float body is constructed so that the specific gravity at which the arm tilts upwards to operate the reed switch can be adjusted to this end, the float body either includes a screwthread cap 56 defining a variable volume filled with air or foamed plastics (Fig. 3) or includes a nut adjustable along the body (Fig. 4, not shown) to prevent the pumping and non- pumping periods from being too short, either the arm 40 is arranged to be frictionally bound to the axle 34, or the fresh solution is introduced to the bath at a point remote from the sensor 30.
