Abstract

1409639 Digital compass LAITRAM CORP 9 Aug 1973 [10 Aug 1972] 37716/73 Heading G1F [Also in Division H3] A digital compass comprises a spherical housing 10 substantially full of a damping liquid, the housing supporting and containing a gimbal 32- 38 adapted to provide movement in two orthogonal directions, the gimbal supporting a generally cylindrical enclosure 50 formed of a cup-shaped member 52 and a circular wall 48 and also containing a damping liquid, an opaque-transparent code disc 56 being rotably mounted inside the enclosure 50 as shown, and a magnet 86 being mounted for rotation with the disc to rotate the disc relative to the housing 10 towards magnetic north, an array 94 of photo-sensors 98 being mounted in the wall 48 and connected with a printed circuit board 96 on the other side of wall 48 and thereby with digital circuitry so that a digital compass heading may be read-out directly and supplied in serial form to a utilization device via cable 116. A lightemitting diode 92 is supplied in the enclosure 50 and liquid is introduced into housing 10 via a port in the gimbal support post 28 and passe. The disc preferably carries a Gray code and is of a diameter substantially smaller than the wall 48. By isolating the disc 56 from movements of the liquid in housing 12 instability owing to this movement is avoided.
