Abstract
1440889 Valves AMERICAN STANDARD Inc 31 Aug 1974 38147/74 Heading F2V A tap suitable to act as each of a pair of independently-actuated valves controlling the respective flows of hot and cold water to a common spout has an apertured ceramic disc UD held non-rotatably in the end of the body VB and an apertured ceramic disc LD held against the disc UD and rotated by a resilient spider SP fixed to the end of a rotatable valve stem ST and having each of its three legs received in a peripheral slot in the disc LD. The spider, which can be of phosphor bronze or stainless steel, has a non-circular tang TG on the end of the stem ST received in a complementary aperture, the end of the tang being upset. The stem and body VB may be made of metal, e.g. stainless steel or plastics. The two discs may be of a mouldable ceramic material, 99% of which is alumina. The fixed disc UD has three equi-angularly spaced circular apertures while the rotary disc has three equiangularly spaced apertures, the minor axes of which equal the diameter of the apertures in the disc UD. The body VB, the stem ST, the two discs UD and LD together with two silencing stainless steel screens SC1, SC2 form a cartridge which is held non-rotatably in a housing by a nut CN. In a modification the upper disc is connected to the stem for rotation, the lower disc being fixed.
