Abstract

571,285. Plug-cocks. SHAND, S. G., PRICE, R. H., and ROGERS, V. C. July 28, 1943, No. 12271. [Class 135] A rotary plug-cock with a conical, cylindrical or spherical plug and independent resilientlysupported seatings has the seals between the cock casing and the seats made by flexible diaphragms clamped at their outer edges within the casing and exposed on their outer surfaces to the fluid pressure. In the form shown in the Figure, the plug is spherical and is housed in a casing of square cross-section with integral end walls, the end walls being formed by flanged pipe connections 5, 6 secured to the main body. The flanges are formed with spigots with inclined ends engaging the casing and arranged to clamp the outer edges of annular, rubber or rubber substitute, diaphragms 13, 14 against inclined shoulders on the casing. The seatings 9; 11 which may be of metal or plastic have rounded outer edges and are provided with tubular extensions 7 inserted into the aperture in the diaphragms. In the absence of fluid pressure, the diaphragms are held against the seatings and the seatings against the plug by dished springs 17. The valve is actuated by a spindle 22 rotatably mounted in an extension 2 of the casing and having at its inner end a part of non-circular section, for instance, a flattened tongue fitting a recess or slot in the plug. The spindle is supported by a plate 35 clamped to the top of the extension 2 by a detachable cap 26 and is guided by bushes 28, 29 inserted respectively in the cap and extension. Leakage past the spindle is prevented by a flanged, flexible sleeve 31 clamped at its outer end between the plate 35 and the casing and secured to the spindle at its inner end by a circlip or winding. The sleeve is preferably unstressed when the cock is half open. The plate has unequally spaced projections 34 engaging notches in the casing and upstanding projections adapted to co-operate with stop projections on a flange 41 on the spindle. In modifications, the diaphragms have outwardly or inwardly directed tubular flanges secured by circlips to the seats. In another form, the inner edges of the diaphragms enter slots in the seats and have projections on their outer sides engaging the flanges of the pipe connections. Further modified forms of diaphragms are described in the Provisional Specification.
