Abstract
1440687 Continuous casting URAL ORDENA TRUDO KRAS ZNAM POLITEKHNICHE INST IM S M KIROVA 3 Jan 1974 00318/74 Heading B3F [Also in Division F4] Molten metal is conveyed to a mould 12 (which may be straight and downwardly directed) from a vessel 1 through a movable inlet box 3, a duct 7 having two inwardly convex walls, Fig. 3, and flanked by inductors 14 for urging the metal through the duct, and an outlet box 10, there being a drive 6 for applying a force to the inlet box 3 to move it axially of the duct 7 to ensure sealing of the joint between the box and duct. The duct 7 may be assembled from separate lengths and the casting may be intermittently withdrawn from the mould 12 shown. To counteract tension in the ceramic convex side walls of the duct 7, they are compressed, by pneumatic jacks 20 (pivotally secured to the housing 15 of one pumping inductor 14) by way of a plate 18 and insulating layer 19, against a base support 17. The pumping inductors 14 are urged towards the duct 7 by drives 16. When a downwardly-directed mould is used, the metal flow under gravity may be increased or decreased by the inductors 14 for stabilization. With intermittent casting withdrawal, when upwardly casting, as shown, the pressure exerted by the top jacks 20 is changed in step with the liquid pressure in the duct passage 8. The inlet or outlet of the inlet box 3 or outlet box 10 respectively can be closed, e.g. after a batch of metal has been cast, by a transverse slide 22; it carries an electricallyinsulating bushing 24 for a flow opening. Before a cast, the refractory lining of the duct 7 may be heated by currents induced in an inserted steel sheet body by the inductor 14. It is heated at the ends by current passed by water-cooled shoes (25) to the slides 22 at their ends where the shoes, when driven, apply force to operate the slides.
