Abstract
1481301 Discharging molten metals BICC Ltd 16 July 1974 [16 July 1973] 33734/73 Heading F4B [Also in Division B3] Molten metal, e.g. Al, Cu or an alloy of one of these metals, flows from a furnace, tundish 1 or other container directly or indirectly into a stationary or a moving-wall mould, such as a wheel-and-band mould, at a rate determined by an alternating magnetic field established about the stream so as to set up an electrodynamic force in the stream, which force (e.g. controlled manually or automatically according to the level of the metal, in the mould and, possibly in the container) compresses the stream to reduce its cross section so that there is little or no contact with the walls of the outlet 2. Since it is necessary to use a control stopper at the start and finish only, there is little wear of the outlet and stopper. The level of the tundish 1 is preferably maintained constant by intermittent feed or continuous feed 4 from a holding furnace. The throat 5 of the silica outlet spout 2 may be shaped more gradually to the bottom of the alumina container 1 so that the induction coil 3 can surround it as well as the spout. The electromagnetic field may tend to drive the stream in the reverse direction as well as to compress it The current frequency may be 7kHz and the voltage may be adjusted to vary the field.
