Abstract

1440038 Explosive compositions J R POST 27 April 1974 18553/74 Heading C1D [Also in Division E1] A blasting agent comprises crushed ammonium nitrate, 1-17% by weight of nitropropane, and 1-17% by weight of an alkanol having 1-5 carbon atoms, the combined weight percentage of nitropropane plus alkanol being 10-18%; the composition in the form of a cohesive compact unit in a bore hole has a density of at least 1-10 gm./cc. The ammonium nitrate may be in cake or prill form and may be crushed so that less than 7 % is retained by a 20 mesh Tyler sieve. Either 1- or 2-nitropropane may be used. The oxygen balance of the explosive is preferably about zero. The explosive may be introduced into a borehole in the form of a slug using a hollow tubular device fitted with a gate (see Division E1).
