Abstract

1439453 Control of DC motors SEVCON Ltd 27 April 1973 [27 Jan 1972] 3898/72 Heading H2J To prevent unstable operation during plug braking of a D.C. motor 18 having a series field winding 13 and controlled by reversing contacts 14, 15 and a chopper regulator 12, diodes 20, 21 and bucking field windings 16, 17 are connected as shown in Fig. 1, whereby each diode operates as a free wheel diode or a plugging diode according to the direction of rotation of the motor and, during plug braking following reversal of switches 14, 15 and of the functions of the diodes 20, 21, the field winding 16, 17 which is in circuit provides a field opposing that produced by the winding 13 to limit the generated armature voltage and so prevent runaway. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the bucking windings (16<SP>1</SP>, 17<SP>1</SP>) are connected in series with the winding 13 between the movable contacts of switches 14, 15, with diodes 20, 21 connected to the junctions of the respective pairs of windings. Operation during plug braking is the same as before, but all three field windings are energized during normal motor running.
