Abstract
1460741 Control of DC motors LANSING BAGNALL Ltd 20 Aug 1974 [10 Sept 1973 18 Feb 1974] 42432/73 and 7210/74 Heading H2J A D.C. motor 5 having a series field winding 7 and, if desired, a further field winding 28, is controlled by a thyristor chopper circuit 9-14 and a change-over switch 4 to either take power from a D.C. source 3 or return it thereto during regenerative braking. With switch contacts 4a, 20 engaging as shown, current flows from the source 3 through members 4, 5, 6, 8 and 7 when thyristor 9 is conductive, turn off of the latter by a regulator 22 causing circulating current to flow through diodes 15, 27. To brake the motor, switch contacts 4a, 21 are engaged to cause the EMF generated by the motor to flow in a circuit comprising members 5, 8, 7, 9 and 17, the winding 28 (if present) assisting in the initiation of the generator action. When thyristor 9 is turned off by the regulator 22, power is returned to the source 3 through the circuits 17, 5, 19, 8, 27 and 17, 5, 19, 8, 7, 15. Thus the motor acts as an unstable series generator when thyristor 9 is conductive, the current being limited by operation of sensor 8 to cause regulator 22 to limit the operating frequency and/or mark-space ratio of the chopper circuit. Such limitation also occurs if required during driving of the motor. Switches (not shown) may reverse the armature connections to reverse the motor direction. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the motor has a shunt field winding (23) controlled by a sensor (25) and chopper regulator (24), members 7, 27, 28 are omitted and a choke (26) functions to limit the rate of rise of pulses of current through the armature. A further diode may be added to shunt members 4, 5 and pass armature circulating current during off periods of the thyristor when driving the motor.
