1438822 Bundling and binding bars or rods POLVA-NEDERLAND BV 30 July 1973 36060/73 Heading B8C [Also in Division B4] A machine for bundling a plurality of elongate tubes or bars and for applying adhesive tape 57 around the bundle comprises at least one disc-shaped member 10 which includes a generally U-shaped cut-out 11 and is rotatable about its centre 4, a pair of clamping claws 33 35 for holding the tubes or bars in the recess 11, which claws are mounted on and rotatable with an associated disc-shaped member 10, and at least one pressure roller 56 movable towards and away from the clamped tubes or rods for applying the adhesive tape 57, supplied from a reel 43, to the tubes or rods as they are rotated by the or each member 10 and its associated claws. In the bundling and clamping arrangement, the bars or tubes may be supported directly by each member 10 or by a generally U-shaped support 26 fixed to the member 10. As shown, each claw 33, 35 of a pair is pivoted to a respective one of the legs of the U-shaped support 26 and to the piston-rod 30 of a piston and cylinder assembly 29 mounted on a shaft 28. Each disc-shaped member 10 is supported for rotation by rollers 12 which are freely rotatable on shafts 12a fixed to a fixed support 13. The peripheral edge of the member 10 includes teeth 15 meshed with two driving gears 16. Each tape pressure and guider roller 56 is mounted on a cantilever 47 which is pivoted at 48 to the machine frame for movement by a piston and cylinder assembly 54. The tape 57 is drawn towards the roller 56 via a pivoted brake member 61. A triangular knife blade 67 for severing the tape 57 is mounted at one end of a pivoted lever 67 which is rockable by a piston and cylinder assembly 66. The knife blade has an apex angle of 60 to 70 degrees. The tubes are automatically counted and formed into groups of a required number before being dropped from above into the or each recess 11, their ends then being aligned by a plate (36), Fig. 1 (not shown), which is mounted on a cantilever (37), Fig. 1 (not shown), and engages the bundle at one end to press its other end against a stop plate. The bundled and taped tubes are lifted from the recess(es) by hooks (70, 71), Fig. 3 (not shown), carried on chains (68), Fig. 3 (not shown), and are deposited on inclined guides (72), Fig. 3 (not shown), down which the bundle moves on to a conveyer belt (74), Fig. 3 (not shown).
